The edited volume Advances in Genetic Programming is the written record of presentations made at a workshop on genetic programming held in July, 1993 at the Fifth International Conference on Genetic Algorithms. The book is divided into three sections: 'Introduction' (two papers), 'Increasing the Power of Genetic Programming' (12 papers), and 'Innovative Applications of Genetic Programming' (10 papers). The book is designed to share recent research in genetic programming with an interdisciplinary audience. Space does not permit a careful review of each paper, but I will focus on particular papers and then offer some general observations.",
